Supplements and Joint Health

When the Tin Man’s joints lock up in the classic film, “The Wizard of Oz,” all it takes is a squirt from the oil can to get things back in working condition. In real life, getting frozen or inflamed joints to move smoothly—and without pain—is not quite so simple.
The National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion reports 46 million Americans—one in five—have been diagnosed with arthritis or another rheumatic condition by a health care professional. In fact, the term arthritis describes more than 100 different conditions that affect joints and other parts of the body. It is one of the most chronic health problems, and one of the nation’s most common causes of disability, limiting the activities of nearly 19 million adults.
The most common form of the disease is osteoarthritis (OA), also called “degenerative joint disease.” It is caused by the breakdown of cartilage and bones from the wear and tear of life, resulting in pain and stiffness in joints such as the knees, hips, neck and fingers. As the cartilage degrades, the bones rub together, causing pain and limiting mobility. OA affects both men and women, and usually occurs after the age of 45, manifesting initially as general pain and stiffness in the joints. Treatments include medications, education, physical activity or exercise, heat or cold, joint protection, pacing activities, weight loss if overweight, self-care skills and sometimes surgery.
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the other common form of arthritis. It is a chronic autoimmune disease that can impact any joint in the body. RA is found primarily in women, and usually strikes between the ages of 20 and 45. The condition is caused by a malfunctioning immune system that attacks healthy joints, inflames the lining of the joints and leads to cartilage degeneration and joint malformation that primarily affect the hands and feet. RA is a chronic condition and its presence ebbs and flows, which can make it hard to detect.
Other rheumatic conditions include lupus (chronic inflammatory disease that affects the skin, joints, blood and kidneys); gout (causes sudden, severe attacks of pain and tenderness and swelling joints, particularly the big toe); and fibromyalgia (characterized by generalized muscle pain and fatigue).Arthritis a different approach
Rheumatoid Arthritis
What is Rheumatoid Arthritis?http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rheumatoid_arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic inflammatory condition that affects the entire body, but especially the joints. The joints typically involved are the hands, feet, wrists, ankles, and knees.
The onset of RA is usually gradual, but occasionally it can be quite abrupt. First signs can be mild symptoms such as Fatigue, low-grade fever, weakness, joint stiffness, and vague joint pain initially preceding the appearance of painful, swollen joints by several weeks. A number of joints are often involved in the onset, usually in a symmetrical fashion, i.e., both ankles, wrists and most often both hands. About 30% of all people with RA, initial experiences are usually confined to one or just a few joints. These joints will characteristically be quite warm, tender, and swollen. The skin over the troublesome area will appear with a ruddy purplish hue. Usually X-ray findings show soft tissue swelling, erosion of cartilage, and joint-space narrowing. As the disease develops, deformities appear in the joints of the hands and feet. The most common terms used to describe these deformities include: swan neck, boutonniere, and cock-up toes.
What are the causes Rheumatoid Arthritis?High Blood Pressure what are the choices
An alternative approach to Hypertension?
What is behind the new guidelines for treatment of high blood pressure?
New guidelines for treatment of hypertension were released by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI). To quote a prominent Doctor specialising in natural and therapeutic approaches to managing disease issues of the modern world ‘When I read the newspaper accounts the changes seemed reasonable, but I was totally disgusted when I read the actual article in JAMA the Journal of the American Medical Association’. He then went on to explain the recommendations and why it would appear that the move is simply designed to put more people on prescription drugs.
Over the last thirty years the NHLBI has coordinated a group of professional organizations and government agencies to raise awareness, look at prevention, treatment and control high blood pressure. Their last report, "The Seventh Report of the Joint National Committee on Prevention, Detection, Evaluation, and Treatment of High Blood Pressure" (JNC 7) based on a number of new clinical trials since the sixth version was released six years ago.
Hypertension (High blood pressure) a major factor in heart disease and the main risk factor for stroke and heart attack (failure), and is also a contributory factor in kidney damage. It affects a massive 1 Billion people in the world and is more evident in the developed world where 50 million Americans fall victim to the condition – that is about one in four adults and roughly half of the people over 65 years old in the US. This shows a strong correlation with diet and lifestyle in developed countries. Using the new classification of "prehypertension" level, a staggering another 45 million persons are candidates for drug therapy – why are we treating the symptom and not addressing the cause? Surely there must be another solution!
