Wild Bluerberries are the King Antioxidant

Wild blueberries have greater antioxidant content than most common fruits such as apples, bananas, red grapes and strawberries according to Cornell University researchers.

Pomegranates, blackberries, raspberries and cranberries also performed well in the tests that measured cellular antioxidant activity (CAA) in 25 fruits. But superfruits such as noni, acai and goji did not were not included in the scientists’ antioxidant tests.

NY nutritionists list top 5 probiotic functional foods

A selection of “whole foods” have been chosen in a top five top functional foods selected by the New York State Dietetic Association (NYSDA), with probiotic, low-fat yogurts being the only truly technical, fortified food.

The others are blueberries (antioxidants) salmon (omega-3), oats (fiber) and low-fat milk (vitamin D and calcium) – a list some may question as somewhat incongruous with the typical lab-oriented, functional foods description, but a selection of foods the NYSDA noted are highly functional despite not possessing introduced functional ingredients.

Science proves that there is nothing fishy about omega 3s!

With so many people wanting to live life to the full it has become essential for us to be aware of the impact that our diet and nutrition has on our health, and that modifying our diet may help us engage in a more active and fulfilling lifestyle right into old age.

Research is showing that in many different areas there can be massive health benefits in increasing our consumption of omega-3 fish oils. This is primarily due to two omega-3 fatty acids called EPA and DHA, which our bodies can only make in very small amounts, which means that we have to get most of our requirement from our diet. Unfortunately, the only major source of EPA and DHA in our diet is from oily fish, such as sardine, herring, and mackerel, and as Government figures reveal that only 25% of us ever eat any oily fish, it means that on average we only get about one third of our daily requirement.

Vitamin D Found In Fish Boosts Brain Power

Eating fish - long considered 'brain food' by generations of housewives - really is good for the old grey matter, as is a healthy dose of sunshine, new research suggests. University of Manchester scientists have shown that vitamin D - synthesised naturally when the skin is exposed to the sun's ultraviolet rays but also found in oily fish - improved the brain function of middle-aged and older men.
